Use a short boundary when it fits
Prepare simple words so you have an option when explaining feels difficult.
Choose words you can use
For an ordinary interaction, you might say: “No, I’m not available” or “I need more space”. These are options, not magic phrases.
Practise gently
Say one sentence aloud on your own. You can speak, write, use a communication aid or choose another approach. Volume and eye contact are not requirements.
If the boundary is ignored
You can consider ending the interaction, moving or asking for support. You do not have to win an argument. Direct refusal may not be the safest option in every situation, particularly where coercion or retaliation is present.
